The Justice System of God

Justice is very important to God. In fact, it is the heart of God. If the enemy can destroy justice in somebody’s life or in a government or nation, he can crush the hope and faith in the human heart and perpetuate every manner of evil.

American slavery, which allowed people to sell and own another human being based on the color of their skin, was once justified in the United States by law. The economy of the entire South was built upon it, affecting the thinking of millions of Americans for generations to come, even after slavery ended. This is one reason why the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in his famous “I Have a Dream” speech of 1963 referenced Amos 5:24. He was speaking to the nation about the terrible injustice of segregation and the denial of civil and legal rights for “Negroes” or African Americans. He said, “We will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.”

I believe Dr. King had a revelation of God’s justice and it caused a social revolution. It gave him uncommon boldness and fearlessness in the face of hate mail and death threats. But, where did God’s justice originate from and why was it needed? We’ll answer this in next week’s BWM website devotional.

Father, forgive me for any ought—anything—I’ve had against anyone and fill my heart with the love of God for my brothers and sisters in Christ and for all people. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
